Expert Answers to Common Questions
Here you will find the answers to what Denver-area homeowners put to us most often in the way of cooling, heating, plumbing and electrical. If your question isn’t listed below, give us a ring and we will be happy to help.
General FAQs
Do you service my part of town?
High 5 covers the Denver metro and out into the surrounding communities – Aurora, Littleton, Golden, Arvada, Westminster, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Brighton and Boulder are all in our territory. We go from the plains to the foothills. Call to make sure we can get to your address or check our service area page.
What are your hours?
We are on the phone and have technicians out 24/7. A burst pipe or an electrical fault won’t wait for business hours to happen, and we don’t either.
How long have you been around?
Since 2012 we have been working with Denver homeowners. That has given us time to put together over 6,000 Google reviews and an A+ with the Better Business Bureau. You can find us under Colorado license #189849.
Is financing available?
You bet. For bigger installations or repairs we have options to break the cost down into monthly payments you can live with, so there is no reason to put off the work.
Do you have a maintenance plan?
With our Club Membership you get routine tune-ups on all your systems (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) plus priority scheduling and some discounts on any repairs that come up.
What kind of brands do you put in?
Our guys are familiar with the likes of Rheem, Ruud, Navien, Kohler, InSinkErator and Delta. But we will service most major brands regardless of who did the original install.
Air Conditioning FAQs
AC is on but the house is still hot. Why?
If you are getting warm air at the vent it could be a clogged filter, a dirty condenser coil, a leak in the refrigerant or a compressor on its last legs. We will come out, make a diagnosis and take care of the repair.
What is the life expectancy of an AC?
With proper upkeep you should see 12 to 15 years out of a central system. But if it is hard put to handle a Denver summer or is already over 15 years old and needs constant attention, you are better off replacing it.
When is the right time for a tune-up?
We like to see you in the spring before the season kicks in. An annual check keeps the system running efficiently and nips little issues in the bud so it lasts as long as it should.
Do you do ductless mini-splits?
Yes. They are ideal for an older home, an addition or a room that never seems to be comfortable since they don’t require ductwork. We will size and put in the system to suit the space.
My air is stuffy or dusty. Can you do anything about that?
It is common here in Colorado. We can put in whole-home humidifiers, purifiers and filtration to clean up the air quality inside your home.
Heating FAQs
Why is the furnace putting out cold air?
Check your thermostat or try a new filter; sometimes it is an ignition issue or a tripped safety switch. If a reset doesn’t do the trick, we can track down the problem and finish the job.
Boiler or furnace?
It comes down to your setup and what you prefer for comfort. Furnaces push heated air through the ducts, boilers heat water for radiators or in-floor systems. Both work well in this part of the state. We put in and service both kinds.
How long is a furnace good for?
If you have been on top of the maintenance, 15 to 20 years is what you can expect. But if your energy bills are climbing, the heat is uneven or you are making repeated repair calls, it is probably time to think about a replacement.
When is the right time for a heating tune-up?
We recommend fall, before the first hard freeze sets in. An annual checkup will see your system through Denver’s long heating season safely and without issue.
Plumbing FAQs
My water pressure is low all over the house, why?
It could be an aging water heater, a faulty regulator, a leak you can’t see or mineral deposits in the pipes. A plumber can get to the bottom of it and make the necessary corrections.
How can I tell if my water heater has had its day?
Look for rusty or tepid water, any pooling at the base of the unit, or popping and rumbling noises coming from the tank. And don’t forget age; once it is past 10 or 12 years old, you are looking at a repair or a new one.
Is a tankless water heater worth the money?
For some households they are. They take up less room, have a longer life than a tank model and give you hot water on demand with less standby energy use.
What about a clogged or slow drain?
Don’t bother with the chemical stuff from the store, it will only eat away at your pipes in the end. Let our team handle it. We do professional hydro-jetting to scour the line clean of even the most stubborn blockages.
I have a leak I can’t spot, can you find it?
We can. Our electronic detection equipment will locate hidden leaks in the supply lines, under slabs or behind walls so we don’t have to tear up your home to get at them.
Your pipes froze this winter?
Not unusual in a Denver cold snap, but they can burst if you leave them. We will thaw and fix the lines and can put in some insulation on vulnerable pipes to avoid trouble next time.
Electrical FAQs
Why is the circuit breaker tripping?
It is doing its job to shut off power in case of an overload, short or ground fault. The odd trip is no big deal, but if it is happening on a regular basis an electrician should have a look.
Time to upgrade the panel?
If you have an older 100-amp or fuse panel it may not be able to handle what you are asking of it these days with the AC, big appliances and EV chargers. Flickering lights, a warm panel or constant tripping are your cues.
Can you put in an EV charger?
Yes, we install Level 2 units for the home. We’ll make sure your panel can take the load so your car is charging safely while you sleep.
What about whole-home surge protection?
It is a minor cost to put in a protector that will shield your electronics and appliances from lightning or grid spikes. Better that than pay for the damage later.
Lights dimming or flickering?
Could be a loose wire, an old panel or too much on the circuit. It can be a fire hazard so don’t just put it out of mind, have us come check it.
