What is the Food Bank of the Rockies?
Founded in 1978, Foodbank of the Rockies seeks to answer the issue of hunger in the states of Colorado and Wyoming. 1 in 8 people in Colorado is food insecure; this means that they don’t know where their next meal will come from. Foodbank of the Rockies focuses on delivering meals to people in need across the Rocky Mountain region.
With distribution warehouses in the Front Range and on the Western Slope of Colorado as well as Casper Wyoming, they provide over 75 mobile food distribution locations as well as on site food pick up services for local hunger relief organizations. Each dollar donated provides 4 meals to people in need, and they consistently work with local organizations to broaden their reach to provide more people with nutritious food they need.
How does this organization work?
Foodbank of the Rockies is able to act as a hub for distribution of food and meals in the Rocky Mountain Region through partnerships with large food producers and grocery stores. With the donations they receive from members of the community they are able to put those funds toward filling in any gaps they may have in their available food selection.
Local hunger relief organizations are able to contact them and “shop” for food that they know their community needs. Schools and youth programs are able to sign up for their Totes of Hope program to ensure that kids can have access to food when they may otherwise go hungry.
Much of their efforts, from packing and sorting to distribution, are aided by volunteers. Individual people and company sponsored volunteer days help move produce and food to appropriate storage in their warehouse. Then it is packed, labeled, and staged for pick up or delivery throughout the Rocky Mountain Region.
